When traveling, you need an international mobile phone that works on the GSM frequency bands used in the countries you are visiting. An international phone, often described as a global phone, travel mobile, travel phone, world phone or tri-band phone is simply a GSM phone that operates on three GSM frequency bands.
You need to ensure your international phone is unlocked. If your phone is locked to your current mobile provider, it will not work with any SIM card service from another provider.
Mobile phones from the US generally don't won't work outside of the US. US phones typically operate on the CDMA network whereas most countries outside the US operate on the GSM network. Even if your US mobile phone is a GSM phone, it may not work on the GSM frequency bands that are used outside the US.
The type of GSM phone (dual-band, tri-band or quad-band) you need for your trip depends on where are traveling to. For example, if you are traveling to Europe, a tri-band phone that operates on the 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz band is ideal.
| Dual band phone | Works in |
|---|---|
| 850 and 1900 MHz | North America only |
| 900 and 1800 MHz | Europe and Asia Pacific |
| Tri band phone | Works in |
|---|---|
| 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz | Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and Caribbean |
| 850, 1800 and 1900 MHz | North America and Asia Pacific |
| Quad band phone | Works in |
|---|---|
| 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz | Works in all GSM countries except Japan and South Korea |
ekit offers a range of dual-band, tri-band and quad band phones to suit any budget.
Dual band phones are the cheapest because they don't work in as many countries. We recommend you purchase a tri-band phone so you can use it at home when you have finished traveling.
ekit mobiles phones are unlocked and come with a charger, optional power adaptors for foreign countries and an English manual. Best of all, you don't need to sign any contracts. The phone is yours to keep forever.
After you purchase an international mobile phone, or if you already own a suitable phone, you will need to purchase a SIM card for service.
A SIM card is a postage stamp sized chip (the brain of the phone) that snaps into the back of your phone. Changing SIM cards is a very easy procedure and varies depending on your phone. The SIM cards provide the service and all the SIM cards we offer are prepaid.
Prepaid SIM cards may be purchased for a specific country where you receive a local phone number and benefit from local rates that nearly every time include free incoming calls! Or you can purchase a regional or global SIM card where you receive one number that works in multiple countries.
